Assistant Director of World Languages | | City School District of New Rochelle Embracing Diversity: Driving Success The City School District of New Rochelle is seeking a dynamic and visionary Assistant Director to support the leadership of its World Language Program. Position Summary As a key member of the Curriculum & Instruction Leadership Team, the Assistant Director of World Languages will assist in the development, implementation, and supervision of high-quality World Language instruction across all grade bands. The Assistant Director will play a pivotal role in supporting principals and instructional staff to advance student learning through evidence-based practices in second language acquisition and culturally responsive pedagogy. The ideal candidate will bring deep expertise in curriculum design and language instruction and will actively promote equity by fostering inclusive learning environments where all students, regardless of linguistic background, cultural identity, or socioeconomic status, feel valued, have equal access to high-quality instruction, and are empowered to fully participate in the language learning process. Supervisory Relationship This position reports to the Director of World Languages or Executive Director of Educational Leadership and Early Learning. Essential Functions Strategic Leadership - Assist in executing, representing, and advocating for the district’s vision, mission, and core beliefs, particularly as they relate to the advancement of World Language education.
- Help promote and embed principles of equity, diversity, and inclusion within the World Language Program across all grade bands, ensuring all students have access to culturally and linguistically affirming learning experiences.
- Work in close partnership with site-based and central office administrators to support the ongoing development, implementation, and review of the district’s World Language Program, providing leadership aligned with instructional goals.
- Contribute to the alignment of content, skills, dispositions, and expectations across grade levels and language offerings to promote consistent, high-quality learning experiences for all students.
- Assist in improving student outcomes by supporting the collection, analysis, and application of qualitative and quantitative data to inform next steps in instruction, intervention strategies, and curriculum enhancements. o Help build and sustain strong instructional teams by contributing to teacher recruitment, onboarding, mentoring, and professional learning opportunities tailored to the needs of World Language educators.
- Stay informed of current research and best practices in educational reform as they apply to World Language education and participate in professional development to build capacity and enhance the program’s impact.
Instructional Leadership - Assist in ensuring the effective implementation of the New York State Learning Standards for World Languages across all grade levels.
- Contribute to the development and rollout of curriculum and instructional services for the World Language Program, across grade bands, aligning with district goals and instructional best practices.
- Support the integration of progressive educational practices, such as culturally responsive teaching, social-emotional learning, and inquiry-based instruction, within the World Language classrooms.
- Collaborate in the evaluation and coordination of instructional materials, digital tools, equipment, and textbooks to support effective teaching aligned with the World Language standards.
- Help design and facilitate ongoing professional learning and capacity-building experiences for World Language teachers and school leaders to improve student outcomes and instructional practices.
- Use assessment and feedback data collaboratively to support curriculum refinement, instructional adjustments, and the identification of effective intervention strategies.
Administrative Leadership - Assist in the leadership and supervision of staff members within the World Language Department to foster individual professional growth and build collective teacher efficacy across schools.
- Help facilitate positive, transparent, and effective communication with key stakeholders, including parents, students, teachers, site-based leaders, and central office teams, within a diverse and dynamic school community.
- Lead and support World Language department meetings to promote collaborative planning and decision-making that enhances instructional quality and student achievement.
- Collaborate with site-based administrators and district leaders to ensure continuity and coherence in curriculum design, academic expectations, and instructional practices from elementary through high school.
- Work with the Office of Human Resources to support recruitment efforts, participate in the hiring process, and assist with onboarding and mentoring new World Language educators.
- Support the development and management of the annual budget for the World Language Program by providing insight into programmatic needs and instructional priorities.
- Research and propose enhancements to course offerings at both elementary and secondary levels to expand access and deepen student engagement in World Language study.
- Remain actively involved in World Language professional networks and associations, bringing new insights and best practices back to the district.
- Undertake additional responsibilities as directed to support the success and strategic vision of the World Language Program and the broader academic mission of the district.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities - Ability to plan, organize, and support the direction of a comprehensive World Language education program that prepares students, from across grade bands, for academic and global success.
- Capacity to lead and support school improvement efforts aligned with clearly defined instructional goals, using data-driven decision-making and facilitating systemic change through progressive, research-based educational practices.
- Deep commitment to fostering equity in both educational access for students and leadership development for staff, with a particular emphasis on supporting traditionally underserved and underrepresented populations.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build and sustain effective working relationships with students, families, school and district staff, community members, higher education partners, and industry stakeholders.
- Strong working knowledge of best practices in curriculum and instruction, instructional program evaluation, professional learning design, school improvement planning, budgetary oversight, and educational data analysis.
- Thorough understanding of applicable New York State education regulations, including standards, accountability systems, and accreditation requirements relevant to public school programming.
Minimum Qualifications Education & Licenses - Master’s degree in education.
- New York State, School District Leader (SDL) license.
Experience - A minimum of four (4) years of experience as a World Language teacher.
- Fluency in at least one World Language in addition to English.
- Proven knowledge and application of effective education principles, practices, and current trends in teaching and learning, particularly within the context of World Language instruction.
- Demonstrated knowledge of curriculum, effective practices in instruction and assessment, and leadership development.
