The City School District of New Rochelle is seeking a director to lead its World Language Program.

Position Summary

As a key member of the Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum & Instruction’s Instructional Leadership Team, the Director of World Languages will provide leadership and coordination for planning, implementation, and assessment of curriculum/instructional initiatives related to improvements in the district’s World Language Program; provide targeted leadership that enables principals to move the K-12 education improvement efforts forward toward the advancement of student learning; and promote equity by actively creating an inclusive learning environment where all students, regardless of their linguistic background, cultural identity, or socioeconomic status, feel valued, have equal access to learning opportunities, and can participate meaningfully in the language acquisition process.

Supervisory Relationship

This position reports to the Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum & Instruction.

Essential Functions

Strategic Leadership:

  • Execute, represent, and promote the district’s vision, mission, and core beliefs.
  • Promote and prioritize equity, diversity, and inclusion in the World Language Program across the grade bands.
  • Collaborate extensively with administrators, both site-based and central office, to provide insightful leadership to the on-going development, implementation, and evaluation of the efficacy of the district’s World Language Program.
  • Support coherent and consistent learning experiences for students by ensuring commonalities in the areas of content, skills, dispositions, and expectations throughout and across grade bands and language offerings.
  • Improve student learning by supporting the ongoing collection, analysis, and use of information about student learning (both qualitative and quantitative) to identify next steps in learning, intervention strategies, curriculum adaptations, etc.
  • Build effective teacher teams through recruitment, orientation, mentoring, and professional learning.
  • Provide direction in and maintain up-to-date knowledge of educational reform and its application in the World Language context and participate in on-going capacity building to enhance professional skills and improve the district’s work towards its vision.

Instructional Leadership:

  • Ensure the implementation of the New York State Learning Standards for World Languages
  • Direct curriculum development and implementation of instructional services for the K-12 World Language Program.
  • Promotes the systemic implementation of progressive educational practices, such as culturally responsive teaching and learning, social-emotional learning, and inquiry-based instruction. 
  • Coordinate the selection of instructional resources, technology, equipment, and textbooks needed to support the implementation of the World Language standards.
  • Facilitate the ongoing professional learning and capacity building of teachers and leaders to improve outcomes for all students.
  • Demonstrate a depth of expertise in how to effectively incorporate culturally responsive practices in a World Language classroom.
  • Implement effective internal assessment and feedback systems to monitor implementation of curricular programs.
  • Use assessment and feedback data to refine curriculum and inform instructional practices.

Administrative Leadership:

  • Provide leadership and effective supervision of staff members assigned to the World Language Department to enhance individual growth and build collective efficacy.
  • Facilitate and develop positive and effective communication and relationships in a complex environment with the various constituents of the community including parents, students, faculty, site-based leaders, and central office leaders.
  • Lead World Language department meetings in order to have the maximum impact on student learning.
  • Work in tandem with site-based leaders and directors to ensure the K-12 articulation of curriculum and academic expectation, and to drive district-wide instructional improvements in a coherent manner that supports Board and district goals.
  • Coordinate with the Office of Human Resources to recruit, hire, and onboard World Language teachers. 
  • Develop and manage an annual budget relating to the World Language Program.
  • Research, promote, and contribute to the development of course offerings in the elementary and secondary schools.
  • Serve as a resource on effective language instruction, current issues, and related legislation for all district staff and the community.
  • Stay abreast of trends and issues in language education and bring innovation and renewal to instruction.
  • Remain actively involved in World Language organizations and provide up-to-date knowledge to the district.
  • Serve as an active member of the Office of Curriculum & Instruction, participating in meetings, presentations, and functions related to district priorities and support.
  • Perform other related duties and assume other responsibilities as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to plan, organize, and direct a comprehensive K-12 education program aimed at preparing every student for success. 
  • Ability to lead improvement efforts toward identified instructional targets by motivating and supporting teachers and facilitating systemic change strategies, with an emphasis on progressive educational practices. 
  • Commitment to equity in educational opportunities for students and leadership opportunities for staff, especially regarding members of traditionally underserved and underrepresented groups.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with parents/guardians, the community, institutions of higher education, business leaders, and administrative staff. 
  • Strong knowledge of best practices in curriculum and instruction, program evaluation, leadership development, school improvement, budget management, and data analysis. 
  • Demonstrated knowledge of state/federal regulations and accreditation requirements governing public education programs.

Minimum Qualifications

Education & Licenses:

  • Master’s degree in education.
  • New York State, School District Leader (SDL) license.

Experience:

  • At least five years of experience as a World Language teacher.
  • Minimum of three (3) years’ experience as an administrator is preferred.
  • Fluent in at least one language.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and application of effective education principles, practices, and trends.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of curriculum, best practices in instruction and assessment, and leadership development.

    NYS Certification is required at time of application
